The stages of ship design
Preliminary Design
It clarifies terms of reference, develops technical documentation giving an idea of the general shape of the vessel. The best options for the vessel are also selected, and basic economical calculations are made, based on which the preliminary characteristics of the vessel are selected. At this stage, general arrangement drawings and basic architectural elements are made.
Preliminary design
On the basis of specified data on customer's remarks and optimum economic options, major elements and dimensions of the vessel are specified, a theoretical drawing is elaborated and navigability and strength characteristics of the hull are defined. Characteristics of machines, mechanisms and equipment are specified and main contractors for their delivery are provisionally planned. The economic qualities of the vessel are further specified and its optimum elements are calculated.
The design documents are further refined: general arrangement drawings, theoretical drawing and calculation of the elements of the theoretical drawing. The hull model is produced and tested and the midship spar is recruited. The conceptual design is submitted for approval to the supervising organisations and approved by the customer, after which it is submitted for further elaboration.
Technical project
This is the main design stage. As a rule, prior to the development of the engineering design, shipbuilding organizations appoint a construction manager for the vessel in question. The main elements and dimensions of the vessel are finalised in the engineering design. The final layout, theoretical drawing and calculations of all components, conceptual ship construction technology as well as preliminary bill of quantities for necessary materials, machinery, equipment, etc. are developed as well as the final agreement of contractors and their delivery.
Documents are drawn up to present the project in a descriptive manner, giving a comprehensive view of the vessel. For this purpose two documents are drawn up: a specification and an explanatory note for all sections, listing everything to be carried out on the vessel, indicating how it is to be done and giving the main characteristics of all elements of the vessel.
Thereafter, the design is approved and all contractors and supplying plants are appointed.
The working drawings
The working drawings are developed after the approval of the technical design, taking into account the technology adopted by the construction plant. At this design stage, order sheets are corrected and clarified, and all shop drawings, installation drawings and service instructions are produced. Unified products as well as parts and units made in accordance with all-union standards and industry norms are widely used in the drawings.
